Being an Inclusive Leader: Mentor/Facilitator Guide

This program will equip court leaders with knowledge about the importance of inclusiveness in the courts, as well as an appreciation of the powerful influence court leaders have on an inclusive court culture. The program is designed to challenge participants through a variety of exercises that will strengthen participants’ skills as a communicator and culminate in a personal action plan for becoming a more inclusive court leader.

Much of the discussion will be based on the attached 2016 Deloitte University Press article “The six signature traits of inclusive leadership: Thriving in a diverse new world.” This article was also summarized in a March 2019 Harvard Business Review article that is available at the Hbr.org website. We encourage you to read the article and become acquainted with the six signature traits of inclusive leadership before The Mentor plays a crucial role in this process by providing guidance during small group activities, leading the discussion and engaging participants in group activities. Facilitators should provide concise insight and instructions, focus on listening to participants and offer meaningful participant feedback.

The mentor role differs from the traditional presenter role in that more time is spent listening than talking. The success of the program relies on discussing differences. Mentors and participants will likely discuss points of view very different from their own. Full participation involves honesty and vulnerability, which can be difficult in a group of highly-experienced professional peers. The Mentor plays a crucial role in setting the tone of each activity by modeling honesty and vulnerability in their own communication, as well as preserving a psychologically safe environment in which group participants can freely exchange different points of view. Assure participants that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!
